It's that time of year again and I'm at the California Democratic Party Convention at, of all places, the JW Marriott at "L.A Live". This is a brand new hotel, yet this is their choice for carpet in the conference rooms which are all named after precious metals or gems.

February general Members Meeting Report
We met our new Secretary/Chief Financial Officer, Vera Carbaugh.

Supervisor Steve Bennett came and talked to the club about the California Fair Elections Act or Proposition 15 on the June ballot. He told us about the "Passion Raiser"/Campaign Kickoff scheduled for March 14th from 2 - 4PM at the Camarillo Library. For more info, click the above link.

Say Buy Buy to American Democracy

Corporatist Rising

Not many people realize that we have a constitutionally limited, representative democracy in this country. It hasn't worked perfectly, but it did work better than no democracy at all. I say DID because it is now dead. This post isn't about the election Tuesday in Mass or the DLC infiltration of the of the Obama administration or any of those little problems. All of those little problems are swept away with today's Supreme Court decision.

Skatepark Update

Tuesday night the OUSD voted to finally allow the Skatepark to be built at its current location next to the Park-N-Ride. Now it goes to the City Planning Committee and the City Council to finalize the plans and begin accepting bids. It has been a long time in coming and it looks like it will take awhile longer, but the Skatepark will be built!

Governor's Special Election Fails

Fear not. All is not lost. Now the fun begins. The state budget, like most state budgets, is in a shambles. Unlike most states, however, here in California we have no good solutions because of the undemocratic 2/3 rules. In an act of deliberate irony I'll quote the godfather of casino capitalism and deregulation, Milton Friedman “Only a crisis produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around." Well, we do have some good ideas lying around right now and I will outline them below, but first we must give our Democratic Assembly members and Senators some much need courage.

Prop 1B Education Funding = Yes
Prop 1C Lottery Modernization(Read License to Steal) = Yes
Prop 1D Children's Services = Neutral
Prop 1E Mental Health Services Funding = Neutral
